Since 2000 years ago, more intellectual and spiritual yoga angas have competed in yoga competitions. It is estimated that the yoga competition started about 200 years ago in its current form. Swami Vivekananda introduced yoga to the West in the 1890s. He traveled throughout Europe and the US to spread yoga's popularity abroad.
Held in 1989 in Montevideo, Uruguay, the inaugural World Yoga Championship was presided over by Swami Maitreyananda (Yogacharya Fernando Estevez Griego). Under the direction of Yoga Maharishi Dr. Swami Gitananda Giri, the inaugural world yoga asanas championship took place in Pondicherry, India, in 1989. Every day, at least one yoga competition takes place worldwide and in India. Since then, a large number of yoga tournaments have taken place all over the world. These competitions helped establish yoga as a sport. However, the authorities, regulating organizations, rules and regulations, yoga curriculum, tournament structure, scoring schemes, and code of conduct vary between all these yoga competitions. When it comes to yoga tournaments, there is no standardization of rules or yoga poses. It is necessary to consolidate all of these titles under one roof.
Yoga contests require a uniform structure as well as uniform guidelines. To see Yogasana grow as a worldwide sport, it is necessary to unify the disparate yoga contests under one organization. The International Yogasana Sport Federation was established as a result.
Yogasana sport competition will include categories for participation, age groups, game format, list of asanas, criteria for scoring, scoring format, the referee, judges’ panel, the other functions, rules and regulations, misconducts and faults, attire and safety considerations.
